The Story of Afghanistan’s ‘Alpha Male’

If you’re a musician, you’d know what it means to reach that point in your career when you have your first full LP album ready for release. I had that opportunity in 2014 when I completed working on my first LP ‘Afghan Provocateur’. Little did I know what I was getting myself in to; the album, even after completion, required time dedication, marketing expenses, and tremendous promotional content online for which I was not ready.

A year later, I’m going through the same journey again to promote my new album ‘Alpha Male’. Sticking true to my roots, I wanted to have an album cover that’s representative of the Afghan culture. It just so happened that while scrolling down my timeline on Facebook one day, I came across this photo:

Inspiration behind ‘Alpha Male’ album cover.

Apparently, this photo is of Afghan women protecting their village. There was no further information of which war they were fighting but they sure look too adorned to be going to a battle field. With all the propaganda out there, you just never know what to believe anymore.

I managed to get in touch with a young artist to give him a vision of what I had in mind about my album cover. We worked on a initial impression of a woman in a burka holding an AK-47 with a war zone background. After a few sessions going back and forth to get the creatives correct, we then had to agree on the colors, the shades, the background, space for fonts, the fine details of making sure she had a rose at the tip of her rifle, etc. – it took so much time! See below some of the initial impressions:

And then there was the final product below, which looks nothing like any of the above pictures or the original concept, but because it caught everyone’s eyes I showed it to, I decided to go with this. ‘Alpha Male’ album cover – this is it – this will go online. I thought it’s sexy and contemporary, giving away the message through a silhouette but not entirely giving it away.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEET AFGHANISTAN’S ‘ALPHA MALE’: ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC PRODUCER SHUJA RABBANI CONTINUES TO DISRUPT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan’s first and only Electronic Dance Music (EDM) producer has announced that his new album will launch on 16th of January 2016.

Kabul, Afghanistan (January 3, 2016): Electronic Dance Music Producer Shuja Rabbani is currently disrupting the music industry in Afghanistan with the first single ‘Prisoner of My Dance Floor’ from his new album ‘Alpha Male’.

As the first and only EDM producer in Afghanistan, Rabbani has already amassed a huge following in his home country and in Dubai where he is currently based. Before Rabbani, EDM was virtually unheard of in Afghanistan and he is the latest music producer to have gone international with his music from the Middle Eastern city of Dubai.

Since the USA invasion in 2001, Afghanistan has endured a violent stigma and next to no attention from the Western music industry. Determined to expose Afghanistan beyond the war scenes, Rabbani represents a new era of artist for the Afghan music industry.

In an effort to continue revolutionizing the music scene in Afghanistan, Shuja’s fans will be excited to learn that his second album will be released on 16th of January 2016.

Shuja Rabbani explains: “In a country where 50% of the population is below the age of 30, there is a huge market for homegrown talent to reach the global music industry through digital means.”

The sequel to his first album ‘Afghan Provocateur’, ‘Alpha Male’ will feature 21 dance tracks which are club ready and is now available for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon. The album will be available for sale in over 200 digital stores including; Beatport, Spotify, Google Play and superstar rapper Jay-Z’s Tidal – the latest digital music streaming platform.

Rabbani is set to release three singles to promote the new album on his social media channels and using the hashtag #EDMA for Electronic Dance Music Afghanistan.

If his new album wasn’t keeping him busy enough, Shuja has also registered a record label under the name of ‘Rabbani Records’ on Beatport. This is the first ever Afghan-owned and registered music label on Beatport.

We’re expecting to hear more great things about this up and coming producer in the future.
