It’s not uncommon to meet a Pilot on an airplane when you’re travelling with some of the airlines but to meet a NASA astronaut – oh what an experience!
Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Donald A. Thomas who has had 4 space missions.
He told the audience about his incredible story of becoming a NASA astronaut, what it takes to be an astronaut, and how he learned a few new skills each time his application was rejected.
It’s one thing to read and learn about the space in blockbuster movies like ‘Interstellar’ and ‘The Martian’ but it is a completely different experience when you meet an astronaut who is sharing with you unique images taken from space and talking about what it’s really like to be up there.
Some points taken away from his presentation:
- Never give up. If you want to achieve something, keep going now matter how many times you fail! Learn and keep going.
- It takes 9-minutes to leave our atmosphere and reach space.
- It takes an army of people to make a space mission successful.
- The smallest cracks, leaks, breakages can lead to a disaster.
